“Prevention Disability” is a new cross-border project that MEDPAK association is implementing in cooperation with PORAKA Nova – Struge. This project is funded by the European Union.

Aim of project:

Better education and information for youth, new parents, families with a disabled person and the communities of the 11 (eleven) local government units of the Librazhd district. Information is geared to inform communities about the rights of people with disabilities and increase knowledge on prevention disability at early age.

Duration of the action: May 2011 – April 2012
Implemented location: Librazhd district
Target groups: Youngsters, potential and expecting parents, young families, and households with a member having any kind of disability.
Final beneficiaries: Local communities, partner organizations involved with the project, health care institutions, social institutions and educational institutions in the municipalities of Librazhd.

The project’s objectives:

1.    To educate and inform the youngsters of high schools about the rights of people with disabilities.
2.    To inform the community about the rights of people with disabilities and about possible prevention of disabilities by offering information seminars and awareness materials.
3.    To increase awareness of parents, representatives of local governments, and school’s staff about the rights of people with disabilities.         
4.    To increase the capacities of health clinic’s staff of prevention of disabilities.
5.    To increase the capacity of social service offices of fulfilling the needs of people with disability and their families.
6.    To evaluate the needs and situations of people with disabilities by addressing their  need for better quality of services offered from local governments.

Activities:

  • - Action 1: Establishment of resource center in Librazhd and create a concise database    
    - Action 2: Creation of educational and promotional material.
    - Launch of updated information on MEDPAK’s website.
    - Action 3: Organizing workshops for the local community.
    - Meeting with urban and rural communities in Librazhd and Struga.
    - Involving volunteers and professionals that are interested in seminars.
    - Open days at MEDPAK Resource Centre and Day center of Librazhd and Struga.
    - Action 4: Organizing an informational fair for disability and prevention.
    - Organizing an informational fair with representatives of organizations who work with disabled persons.
    - Creating a network of cooperation with representatives from local government unities, the Education Office and Directory of Public Health.
    - Action 5: Evaluation and reporting.

Outcomes and expected results:

•    Accessibility of information and education on disability issues.
•    Train groups to have better information about disability issues and understand prevention methods, detection, treatment and rehabilitation of disabilities.
•    Grown interest about the services offered to people with disabilities in Librazhd district.
•    Established cross-border network between relevant institutions and organizations.
•    Improvement of the quality of service of medical, educational, and social institutions or organizations.
